Close Attention to Detail and Craft: Examining the HAB001's Design

The HAB001 is a fully realized, practical wristwatch with impressively advanced design specs. Its GPS satellite receiver enables instant synchronization in any time zone around the world, while solar power generation functionality eliminates the need for battery replacements at regular intervals. It even comes with a dual time zone display feature, which is handy when traveling abroad, and a chronograph function.

The case design incorporates a powerfully beveled form, giving the watch a cutting-edge look. However, making all of this possible while still fulfilling technical requirements was no easy task. Take the dial, for example: it required a specialized form and material capable of accommodating both solar power generation and GPS signal reception. And because this was a watch designed for everyday use, designers had to take full consideration of operability, a light and comfortable feel when worn, and a mechanism for easy bracelet or strap replacement.

The most impressive part of HAB001’s design is that these constraints did not end up as design and functional compromises, but instead became the watch’s very strengths.

New Possibilities in Dial Materials: The Dignified Visage of Resin

The first thing that catches the eye when looking at the HAB001 is the bluish-gray dial made of a semi-transparent resin material. The triangular geometric pattern covering the entire dial creates an interplay of intricate, elegant shadows in response to incoming light. At a glance, it comes across simply as a neat and composed surface, but when examined through a loupe, the astonishing attention to detail in the pattern is readily apparent.

The HAB001’s dial features a geometric pattern of repeating triangular forms. Design considerations extend down to the finest detail, including minute dips and rises, circular machining marks covering the whole surface, and the ways in which these take in and reflect back light. The results are a testament to the rich expression which can be achieved using resin.

Resin was chosen for the dial in order to ensure sufficient transparency for sunlight to reach the solar cell inside used for power generation. However, when using a resin-type material instead of metal, it is much more challenging to achieve a sufficiently high-end, premium appearance. The designers overcame this obstacle by adding a triangular pattern using the dial surface’s resin mold. While this regular, geometric pattern creates a stable, solid feel, the unevenness of the surface creates contrasts of light and shadow, giving it a three-dimensional appearance.

Furthermore, circular machining marks were added to the surface, comprising fine lines etched across the entire face in parallel with the outer circumference. These marks enable localized light reflection to impart more intricate plays of radiance across the resin’s surface and thus prevent it from taking on an overly plain, flat appearance.

The dial uses a brand-new design. A repeating, geometric pattern of triangular forms creates diverse surface expressions that change based on the viewing angle. Furthermore, while it accommodates the constraints of the antenna and solar power components inherent in a GPS solar model, this model watch also features the Caliber 5X63 movement with dual-time display and chronograph functionality, and the three sub-dials are positioned in a well-balanced fashion.

Comfortably Light Feel and Powerful Thanks to Pure Titanium

The case and bracelet are made from pure titanium, a material that offers light weight and strong corrosion resistance. However, it is much harder to cut, polish and finish than stainless steel. Close examination reveals that the designers made expert use of brushed and polished surfaces in just the right places.

The brushed finish serves as the foundation, but sections such as the bezel’s ridge line use a polished surface, which reflects light more easily, emphasizing the sharp edges of the overall design. Moreover, the designers retained the lightweight, nimble feel that is typical of titanium while bringing the watch’s metallic aura to the fore through contrasts with reflected light.

The pure-titanium case and bracelet, with brushed and polished finishes masterfully distributed throughout. Titanium offers the advantage of being lightweight while expressing a powerful, metallic look.

The bracelet adopts a three-link format to ensure sufficient visual impact when juxtaposed with the octagonal bezel. Each link features a brushed top surface alongside a polished finish for the angled sections, resulting in a sense of substantiality that matches the octagonal bezel design. The outer links are tapered to achieve a seamless transition to the case ridge line, which further unifies the design appearance as a whole. This, along with tapering the links all the way down to the buckle, cultivates a nimbler, more refined demeanor.

Thanks to meticulous attention to the case, bezel, and bracelet details in terms of surface composition, surface area, angles, and other factors, this model boasts a strong presence that comes across as both substantial and luxurious.

Two-piece bezel used to fulfill technical design requirements

The exterior design requirements of a GPS solar watch differ from those of a standard mechanical model. It must be able to receive satellite signals, take in light through the dial for solar power generation, and integrate an internal antenna and solar cell beneath the surface. There also needs to be sufficient clearance between the crystal and dial. Moreover, the movement used for this model is the Caliber 5X63—a multifunctional movement including dual-time display and a stopwatch function capable of measuring to 1/20th of a second. To make all of this possible, a two-piece titanium bezel was used for the first time in an Astron model, enabling the powerful expressive form and light-and-comfortable feel on the wrist.

The HAB001 is the first Astron watch to adopt a two-piece titanium bezel. Using a separate octagonal, ornamental portion keeps the bezel’s height lower than that of the crystal, achieving a greater sense of three-dimensional depth for the polygonal bezel while lowering the perceived center of gravity when the product is worn. Moreover, the ornamental bezel section adopts a brushed finish and the ring a polished finish, creating a dichotomy unique to the two-piece configuration that imparts greater visual variation and sharper design expression.

In many Astron 3X models, such as the SSJ013, a single-piece, polygonal metal composition is used for the bezel portion. The 5X line continues this tradition, with the bezel’s downward slope starting from the top side of the crystal. The result is a taller bezel component, which makes the center of gravity for the timepiece feel higher and thus worsens the perceived closeness of its fit to the wrist. When viewed from the side, this design also creates a much bulkier look.

Armed with this knowledge, the designers for this latest model went with a two-piece titanium bezel configuration instead. By separating the ornamental portion to split the bezel into two parts, they were able to reduce the overall component height. This gave them the needed vertical clearance while ensuring a low-center-of-gravity feel for a case that hugs the wrist more snugly. It also reduces the bulky impression of past models when viewed from a side profile.

Quick-Change System for Increased User Friendliness and Neatly Unified Form

It is impossible to talk about the new HAB001 without touching upon the newly developed quick-change system. A unique and simple push-button mechanism on the case’s back enables quick and easy change-out of the bracelet or strap by the user.

By swapping out the pure-titanium bracelet for a silicone strap, for example, the same watch takes on a sportier, more active feel. Official Seiko silicone straps compatible with the quick-change system are available as options in both black and white colors.

Silicone straps that are compatible with the quick-change system and specially designed to pair with the HAB001’s case design are available as standard options in two colors: black and white. Each strap is specifically tailored to the case design, ensuring no loss of visual unity in form after swapping out.
The white silicone strap puts greater emphasis on the case. The octagonal bezel and ridge line take center stage for a clean, nimble-feeling luxury sports watch.

Furthermore, the loose end of the strap tucks in under the buckle when fastened to hide it from view, which makes for a cleaner appearance atop the wrist, mitigates protrusion of the extra strap length onto the arm’s surface, and creates a more comfortable feel for the wearer.

It goes without saying that any easy-release mechanism for bracelets and straps would be pointless if it accidentally released at unintended times. That’s where the guard cover for the quick-change button comes in: this addition prevents contact with the wrist and accidental button presses as a result.

The quick-change button is protected by a guard cover to prevent accidental presses while wearing the watch. The bracelet features a “12H” indicator mark to clearly convey the correct attachment orientation, and an audible and tactile click occurs when the bracelet or strap is properly affixed. This design prevents contact between the button and the wrist, ensuring ease of use and a comfortable feel when worn.

Bracelets and straps, which attach at the 12 o’clock position, feature a “12H” mark to intuitively communicate which end should be orientated at 12 o’clock and which at 6 o’clock. Another key feature is the clicking sensation when the strap or bracelet is attached, which enables the user to confirm that the connection has been completed correctly not only by touch but also by sound.

All-Encompassing Design to Enable Continued Use Over the Years

The HAB001 boasts an exterior form that makes it optimal for daily use, and includes features and mechanisms designed with full user consideration. The pure titanium used for the case and bracelet is lightweight but can be easily scratched. The adoption of super hard coating, an advanced Seiko surface treatment technology, enhances its resistance to scratching. In addition, a super-clear coating is applied to the sapphire crystal’s surface, which reduces glare and improves dial legibility. Finally, the watch is rated at 10 atm water resistance and offers antimagnetic protection.

As one would expect, its positioning as a GPS solar watch also makes this model a highly practical timepiece for regular use—complete with excellent durability and functional convenience. The utmost care was taken when crafting this product, from the outer materials all the way down to the movement itself. For users that care about functionality, aesthetic form and ease of use, with no willingness to compromise in any single one of those areas, the latest Astron is an obvious choice.

Black-Dial Alternatives for a Different Expressive Feel

The dial features subtle texturing to catch light and create alluring visual contrast, iridescent and polished finishes used tastefully in intentional spots across the index, and distinctively large-and-thick hands, all of which combine to achieve excellent three-dimensional expression alongside impressive legibility. These refined design details stand out with even greater clarity atop the black-dial models.
