Seiko celebrates 145 years
with a new Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph.
with a new Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph.
In 1881, Kintaro Hattori opened a shop known as “K. Hattori” in Tokyo’s Ginza district, beginning what would evolve into today’s Seiko. Guided by a philosophy to be “Always one step ahead of the rest,” he went on to produce Japan’s first wristwatch in 1913.
Building on its founding spirit, Seiko experienced a period of rapid transformation in the 1960s. During this decade, the company introduced numerous breakthroughs, including Japan’s first chronograph wristwatch in 1964, its first diver’s watch in 1965, and the world’s first quartz wristwatch, the Quartz Astron, in 1969. The decade also saw the introduction of Seiko Blue, a signature color, refined over time to the present day, that reflects Seiko’s pioneering spirit.
Following this legacy, a new limited-edition creation joins the Seiko Astron collection, commemorating Seiko’s 145th anniversary with striking blue accents inspired by Seiko Blue. The timepiece is powered by the new GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph Caliber 5X63.
A new movement and a new dial layout
In 2012, Seiko took electronic watchmaking to a new level with the Astron GPS Solar, which connects to the Global Positioning System (GPS) and adjusts to every time zone* with the simple push of a button while generating all the energy it needs from light alone. The new Caliber 5X63 combines Dual-Time technology with a chronograph function that measures up to 24-hours during chronograph operation in increments of 1/20th of a second.
*If there are changes in the region / time zone / DST, manual selection may be required.
The limited-edition model celebrates the anniversary with blue accents in key positions on the dial. The blue seconds track and the sub-dials stand out in a crisp contrast against the radiant light-silver hue of the main dial, resulting in a refreshingly modern and refined look. Thanks to the new movement, the sub-dials are arranged horizontally across the dial in a symmetrical layout. Set against the main dial’s geometric pattern of interlocking triangles, the display conveys a sense of poised stability.
Enhanced wearing experience thanks to a new construction
The new creation inherits Astron’s signature dynamic case design, characterized by its multifaceted, dimensional profile, while featuring a newly introduced two-piece octagonal titanium bezel, achieving a low center of gravity and enhancing the comfort of the lightweight titanium case. The brushed finishing on the top surface of the faceted bezel contrasts elegantly with the polished sides, enhancing the design’s beauty.
The limited-edition creation includes an exclusive silicone strap featuring
a blue-and-white color combination that echoes its dial design.
The case also features a quick-change system, enabling easy removal of straps with the push of a button. Adding a new strap is as simple as pressing it into place for a secure fit. This enables an instant switch between the titanium bracelet and an exclusive silicone strap for a versatile look and enhanced functionality. Made with reinforced silicone, the strap offers exceptional durability suitable for active use.
Three additional variations join the Astron collection
In addition to the commemorative timepiece, three new continuous-production models featuring the same movement and exterior construction also join the collection: one with a blue-gray dial, another with a black dial, and a third featuring a black dial accented with a gold-colored inner bezel ring, indexes, and hands, paired with a black silicone strap.
White and black silicone straps, compatible with all the latest GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph models being introduced today, will also be available for purchase.
The four new watches will be available at select retail partners nationwide from June 2026, with the commemorative model as a limited edition of 2,000.
