The first model of Datsun 240Z was made in 1969,
the same year the Speedtimer was created.
In 1971, adorned with the Seiko logo, the Datsun 240Z with No.11 on its side conquered harsh terrain as it raced 6,200 kilometers to victory in the East-African Safari Rally,
widely regarded as one of the toughest races in the world.
In 1969, Seiko introduced the Speedtimer, the world’s first automatic chronograph equipped with both a vertical clutch and a column wheel,
two features that greatly enhanced the measurement of elapsed time.
Today, three limited-edition watches drawing on a range of Seiko technologies join the Speedtimer series,
paying homage to the shared legacy of Seiko and Datsun 240Z and their advancements in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
It was a new brand-name born in 1932 at DAT Jidosha Seizo, the predecessor of Nissan Motor.
Originally, the brand “DAT” was founded under Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works, the predecessor of DAT Jidosha Seizo, and it was an acronym derived from the initials of three investors’ surnames. Later on, “SON" was applied to the end and became “DATSON” as it was the “son” they created. However, in Japanese “SON” is the word for “loss” therefore, it was immediately changed to “SUN,” which has brighter associations, and the name became DATSUN.
Launched in 1969, the Datsun 240Z became a worldwide hit, not only in Japan but also in North America.
With the aim of demonstrating its high performance as a sports car, the Datsun 240Z began to participate in world rally competitions.
Seiko, sharing Datsun’s spirit for taking on challenges, supported the Datsun 240Z in motorsports activities in the early 1970s.
The logo symbolizing the "DATSUN" is placed at the 6 o'clock position. Inspired by the color of rally cars, which minimizes light reflection, matte black is used for the dial, while red accents are added to the second hand and dial ring to enhance legibility.
The Arabic numerals on the dial ring take inspiration from the font used on the Datsun 240Z dashboard.
By operating the 4 o'clock crown, a countdown timer function can be used to measure key intervals in motorsports competitions, such as the time remaining before the start and target durations for tasks such as tire changes and refueling.
The leather strap is sourced from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group, of which Seiko is a member. The seams on the inner sides of both of the leather strap is covered with lining to minimize damage from sweat and water.
*The Leather Working Group (LWG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to responsible and sustainable leather production. Seiko is a member of LWG and aims to increase the percentage of leather produced by LWG-certified tanneries to over 90% in the future.
