Development began roughly three years ago in response to Shohei Ohtani’s own reflection:
“How much longer can I keep going as a baseball player?"
The watch’s name: “Seiko Star Time.”
Inspired by the stars that move through the vast flow of eternity, this mechanical watch was created to express the time Ohtani has already accumulated—and the time he will continue to build from here.
At its heart is a mechanism designed to count one million hours—a span of approximately 114 years.
With the full force of Seiko’s technology and expertise brought together,
an unprecedented and truly monumental challenge began.
The stars move so slowly as to be almost imperceptible,
and yet they continue their course with unwavering certainty.
That motion echoes the time Shohei Ohtani has built
through the steady accumulation of daily effort.
The Seiko Star Time is a special model that channels
the movement of the stars across the night sky
and the path of Ohtani’s ongoing challenge.
The numbers on the five rotating discs indicate the accumulated time in hours as they pass beneath the red line on the inner surface of the box-shaped sapphire crystal. Additionally, the central disc displays the current time in a 24-hour format. A diamond is set on each disc to indicate when it has completed a full rotation. There is also a diamond at the center of the discs.
The diamond at the center of the discs represents the North Star—an unwavering goal whose position never changes. It expresses Shohei Ohtani’s determination to move forward without hesitation, steadfastly pursuing that goal.
The arcs extending from the rotating discs toward the ceramic bezel and the silicone strap represent the trajectories of the stars.
Lines evoking the trajectories of the stars are also applied to the sides of the High-Intensity titanium case, while the top of the crown is set with a blue sapphire.
How was this special watch born of Shohei Ohtani’s own reflections and aspirations?
How did Seiko’s project development members confront unprecedented challenges to create a mechanism designed to track one million hours?
From concept to design, from manufacturing to the moment it was delivered to Shohei Ohtani.
Follow the journey of the Seiko Star Time—
from the first idea to its completion—
