Ryohei Suzuki Special Interview

Actor Ryohei Suzuki, who has been
appointed as a global ambassador,
talks about the appeal of King Seiko.
What are his impressions of the new King Seiko VANAC,
and in what situations does he feel it is best to wear?
Mr. Suzuki shares his insights on the overlap
between the ideal image he aspires to as an actor and King Seiko.

What is your impression of King Seiko?

What I love about King Seiko is the watches feel really modern, but I can still clearly see the DNA of the vintage King Seiko.
Because I am a vintage watch fan myself.
I actually have two vintage King Seiko from the sixties.
So I have a huge respect for the sense of beauty from that era.
So that's why I am very happy to see the brand has the same kind of affection, and pride for its history.
And at the same time, they are giving the watches modern designs and modern specs, for today’s users.
So this kind of attitude is what makes King Seiko so special and truly timeless.

What is your impression of the VANAC's design?

I was surprised when I first saw it—because it was nothing like any other King Seiko watches I knew.
You know, its colorful dials, that V-mark on the seconds hand, the case with sharp edges, the bracelet, everything was very unique.
And I like that funky, retro-futuristic look from the seventies.
But what surprised me even more, was that they built it with that new movement and gave it 10 bar water resistance. And of course the see-through case back is also fun to look at.
So, on the outside, it’s bold and colorful, but inside, it’s all about serious watchmaking.
To me, VANAC is a watch for people who are not afraid to stand out.

When would you choose to wear the King Seiko VANAC?

It would be great for casual wear, and I also think it looks very sophisticated with a suit like this. And also, it can be a great daily watch, you know, because it's so accurate and water resistant.
You know, for me, watches, are something that expresses your "philosophy".
It’s not just a tool, or just an accessory.
So a watch like VANAC is perfect to make a statement about your philosophy, your mindset, and your way of living.

As an actor, do you think about crafting a timeless performance?

I feel like, you can’t really plan to make something timeless.
All we can do is just to work hard every time. You must give everything you've got into what’s right in front of you right now. You know, your skills, passion, experience, ideas, I mean, everything you've got.
And if you’re lucky, maybe one of your works will be loved for generations.
So really, all we can do is just to keep doing our best every time.
Yes, I believe that's the only way to create something timeless.
