Arita porcelain was created in the early 17th century as Japan's first porcelain. Since then, this distinctive craftsmanship has been passed down for over 400 years, captivating countless people with its unique artistry.
The technique of making unglazed Arita porcelain, introduced for the first time in Presage, has recently become an established method of expression with high design value. Typically, Arita porcelain is glazed, giving it a smooth and glossy finish. With this newer method, artisans have recreated the natural, warm, matte texture of porcelain stone and achieved the sharp ridgelines that give unglazed Arita ware its distinctive character.

Dial

The dial features a modern interpretation of the traditional hishi (rhombus) pattern, a motif historically associated with good fortune, longevity, and protection from illness. This intricate design surrounds the indexes, creating a refined texture that enhances the dial’s three-dimensional appearance. The gold-colored hands and indexes provide a vivid contrast to the matte white porcelain that confers a rich visual depth.

Strap

A lustrous black leather strap sourced from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries enhances the watch’s refined elegance, beautifully complementing the matte white dial.

Craftsmanship

Seiko's unique Arita porcelain dial required a long period of research and development to achieve the durability needed for a wristwatch. This Arita porcelain dial, which fuses Japan's world-renowned traditions and techniques, uses a porcelain material that is more than four times stronger than conventional porcelain. It undergoes a high-precision casting process using a gypsum mold, followed by firing at a high temperature of 1,300°C, making it an exceedingly complex process to complete.
The unglazed dial was created under the supervision of master craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi, who is affiliated with the long-established "Shin-Kama" kiln (located in Arita, Saga Prefecture). It was completed through the fusion of Mr. Hashiguchi’s techniques with those of kiln team leader Toshiaki Kawaguchi, who inherited his skills from Mr. Hashiguchi, along with the expertise of Arita’s artisans.
