The second part of a short interview
with skateboarder Yuto Horigome,
who shares his thoughts and perception
on Show your Style.
What do skateboarder Horigome and the
5 Sports have in common?
I didn’t aim to create an original skateboarding style from the beginning.
I was just wholeheartedly enjoying skateboarding.
When I started competing overseas, I couldn’t achieve any results and often failed to qualify.
From that time on, I began thinking about how I could stand out among the various skaters in the world trying to get to the top.
Then I began thinking that if I didn't do original tricks, I wouldn't stand out and win.
I constantly battle myself and my fear when I try new techniques.
I try to work on new tricks gradually and without haste because if I push myself too hard, I can get injured.
New tricks are usually born while skateboarding with a friend. We try new things together and sometimes they end up being new tricks.
I think the similarity between 5 Sports and me is that we are not only in Japan but also on the world stage.
I, too, have been working toward my dream of advancing on the world stage from Japan, and I hope to continue working hard with 5 Sports.
At first, everyone told me there was no way I could go to America with my skateboard.
I chose not to pay much attention to them and believed in myself and worked hard, using those around me who supported me as motivation.
No matter what anyone says, if you are firm in your feelings, your dreams will come true.
I wish you all the best in pursuing your dreams.
