The goal that inspired the creators of Grand Seiko half a century ago was hardly a modest one. They were determined to create nothing less than the best luxury watch in the world. So, before creating the watch, they created the standard it had to attain. The Grand Seiko Standard of precision and reliability was set at a level higher than any yet achieved by Seiko and higher than all the international chronometer standards. New skills and technologies were required in order to make timepieces that would meet and exceed the new standard, and Seiko developed them. After years of research, the dream was fulfilled with the launch, in December 1960, of the first Grand Seiko watch.

Today, just as then, Grand Seiko is focused on the pure essentials of watchmaking. Grand Seiko strives to provide lovers of fine watches with the ultimate, functional watch. Each and every Grand Seiko is as accurate, as reliable, as legible and as comfortable to wear as can be achieved. Grand Seiko is everything a luxury watch should be, with no unnecessary elaboration or undue decoration. Just pure, simple and basic watchmaking, raised to the level of an art form.

For fifty years, the story of Grand Seiko has been the story of a team's dedication to perfecting the deceptively simple idea of creating the ideal watch. Though times change and Seiko's watchmaking technology has evolved rapidly, the spirit and essence of Grand Seiko has remained the same. For fifty years, Grand Seiko has stood for the same simple yet exacting ideals. And so it will be for the next fifty years. And beyond.

Seiko is one of the few true ‘manufactures’ that is capable of producing every part in-house from hair spring to the watch hands and is the only manufacture that has mastery of all four watchmaking technologies, Spring Drive, mechanical, Kinetic, and quartz. Grand Seiko not only features a range of mechanical calibers, the celebrated 9S series, but also offers the unique Spring Drive Caliber 9R series and the super accurate Quartz Caliber 9F series. All the Grand Seiko calibers have been created with the same fundamental aims; high accuracy, legibility and reliability.

The precious responsibility of crafting Grand Seiko watches is shared between two remarkable studios, Shizuku-ishi Watch Studio located in the woods of northern Japan and Shinshu Watch Studio in the high mountainous area in the center of the main island of central. The 240 master craftsmen and women of these two studios are dedicated to perfecting the ‘ideal watch’. For over fifty years, Grand Seiko has stood for the same simple yet exacting ideal, perfect precision, beauty and legibility. And this tradition will never change.
