The drama of Kabuki theater inspires the new Ananta.

Ananta, the ancient Sanskrit word for ‘Infinite’, graces the collection that best expresses Seiko’s infinite dedication to perfection by paying homage to Katana, the ancient Japanese art of sword making. No limitations are imposed on the design team invited to create Ananta; they can use any movement and they can seek design inspiration anywhere they choose. Their aim is to create a watch that would best embody Seiko’s mission to offer the most technologically advanced craftsmanship in the world.

The 2012 Ananta collection expresses the richness of Japan’s cultural heritage in a new way by incorporating a dial painted by hand with Japanese lacquer and finished with the bold color accents of Kumadori, the make-up used in the traditional theater of Kabuki. Seiko commissioned Isshu Tamura, a world-renowned lacquer artist, to create the dial. Each dial is painted, black layer by black layer, and polished by hand by Mr. Tamura in his studio in Kanazawa on the western shores of the Japanese mainland. Once the black lacquer is finished, the red Kumadori rings are applied to create startling highlights around the inner dials, an effect as dramatic as Kabuki itself.
