Media interest hits new heights at the Seiko press conference.
March 8, 2012
The Seiko press conference draws a huge crowd.
On Thursday, March 8, the Singapore Room in the Congress Center was the place to be for the world’s watch media. More than 400 people were there to hear Mr. Hattori introduce Seiko’s exciting new collection. His address was delivered by video as illness had prevented him from travelling to Basel this year, but the excitement in the room was undiminished as Mr. Hattori explained the direction of the new Seiko in the areas of both luxury and high technology.
Mr. Yoshino then revealed the new Special Edition Grand Seiko Hi-beat 36000 and the Limited Edition Grand Seiko GMT collection, demonstrating that Seiko was indeed fulfilling the promise that Mr. Hattori had made to further enrich Seiko’s offer to the luxury watch market.
From Grand Seiko, the focus shifted to Sportura. Mr. Yoshino introduced the 2012 collection, including the new FC Barcelona chronograph and an entirely new Aviation Chronograph.
Mr. Yoshino presented Grand Seiko and Sportura.
He then introduced the new women’s Sportura collection and the remarkable young athlete who will be wearing Sportura this year. Darya Klishina is a young Russian long jumper whom Seiko first met when she won the 2007 World Youth Championships. Ever since, Seiko has followed her career with interest and admiration and Mr.Yoshino expressed Seiko’s delight that Darya had agreed to work with us to promote the new Sportura.
There was a hush of expectation as a second video message from Mr. Hattori introduced the new Seiko Astron and Mr. Akashi had the audience’s rapt attention as he described the genesis, features and technological sophistication of the world’s first GPS solar watch. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Seiko Astron was the focus of the media’s interest in the ensuing question and answer session. We will talk more about Astron later.
