Baselworld 2012 closes its doors.
March 15, 2012

Today, Baselworld closes its doors for the last time this year. Nine days have passed in what seems like a flash and now, suddenly, there is a very different atmosphere in the Hall of Dreams; gone is the buzz of excitement, gone are the jostling crowds and gone are the shouts of greeting as old friends meet again at Baselworld after another year. In their place is an air of reflection and almost sadness as exhibitors and visitors alike look around at the huge stands, nearly all of which will never be used again. For most exhibitors, Baselworld 2013 will be a new beginning!

As we close up the Seiko “Cube” for the last time, memories of five great years come flooding back. When the Cube was first unveiled in 2008, it showcased the celebrated Spring Drive Space Walk watch which went on to win a Grand Prix de Geneve prize. In 2010, the first Full Matrix EPD watch was displayed here and, in 2012, Seiko’s mastery of watchmaking technology was further re-enforced by the launch of the remarkable Seiko Astron, the first Solar GPS watch in the world. The Cube has witnessed the release of some of the most important advances in our industry.

For Seiko, however, it will perhaps be the rise of Grand Seiko for which the Cube will be most fondly remembered. It seems strange now, but it was only in 2010 that Grand Seiko was released to the international market. In just two short years, Grand Seiko has made a profound impression on the luxury watch world and to see it at the heart of the Seiko stand in 2012, with nearly 30 models on display, is to realize that the Cube has seen history in the making.

Baselworld 2012 has been a huge success for Seiko. We have held more meetings with retail partners and journalists than ever before and the new Astron has been the talk of the show. In just 5 days, the Astron video has been seen over 35,000 times on You Tube alone and the watch blogs are already full of praise for this landmark watch. There’s no time for nostalgia here at the Seiko stand on the last day of Baselworld 2012, as we have so many enquiries about Astron to answer. The future starts here!

Thank you very much for reading our daily reports from Baselworld. We look forward to seeing you again next year.
