Grand Seiko. The legend is re-born.
March 26, 2011
At last year's Baselworld, Grand Seiko was launched to the international market on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its first launch in Japan.
This year, Grand Seiko takes pride of place at the South and East entrances of the SEIKO stand, with a very special watch at the center of the 8 models on display. It is a re-edition of the original 1960 Grand Seiko. This is no mere replica. It is a demonstration of both SEIKO's respect for its history and our constant striving for innovation.
While the design is completely faithful to the spirit of the original, it is equipped with a newly developed hand-winding movement, Caliber 9S64, which delivers a level of performance that was impossible 50 years ago. With SEIKO's proprietary alloy 'SPRON 610' and the escape wheel and pallet manufactured by MEMS (Micro Mechanical System), this new caliber provides a 72-hour power reserve and a mean daily accuracy rate of -3 to +5 seconds a day. This stunning new creation is truly the very best of SEIKO, combining traditional watchmaking and the most advanced technology.
A video in the showcase shows the historical timepieces of Grand Seiko from the very beginning and the brand new caliber 9S64 in close up.
The other screen introduces our two specialized watch studios; Shizuku-ishi Watch Studio which makes SEIKO's mechanical watches and Shinshu Watch Studio where Spring Drive is manufactured.
At the center of the stand, the 18 carat gold version of SEIKO 130th anniversary commemorative model is displayed together with its 1960 original model.
